Ranomi Kromowidjojo wins top event on last day Swim Cup 2016

Tonight’s Swim Cup 2016 event was covered by many finals amongst which the 200m Freestyle men and 100m Freestyle women.

Junior Swim Cup
The stands in the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium were very well occupied during the Junior Cup in which the eight best boys and girls swam their finals. Sten Postma (55.09) and Nienke Jonk (59.75) touched in first.

Records smashed
Prior to the major races this evening a number of records were smashed. Sanne Hofman swam a new IPC world record in the 400m Freestyle final in 5:08.07.

Later that night no less than two world records were broken in one race: in the 100 m IPC Freestyle Zulfiya Gabidullina from Kazachstan clocked 1:34.86. Dutch Liesette Bruinsma swam a new world record in her class by touching in 1:07.22.

In the 50m Backstroke Maaike de Waard swam under the A standard for the European Championships in London. She finished in 27.85. “I am very happy with my result, I wasn’t that very nervous, actually I felt only a sound tension. In fact I didn’t expect that I would swim under the standard,” so says De Waard.

Climax
In the 200m Freestyle final for men Dutchmen Maarten Brzoskowski and Sebastiaan Verschuuren had to fight for the victory.  The latter one finished in 1:47.20 whereas Brzoskowski finished first (1:47.17), however this time didn’t meet the standard for Rio (1:46.98). Kyle Stolk clocked 1:48.44 which makes him qualify for the European Championships in London.

Tonight’s topic was of course the 100m Freestyle women in which big stars like Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Femke Heemskerk participated. ‘Kromo’ finished in 53.55 (against 53.21 yesterday) and Femke touched in 53.98 finishing second.

Next year
The Swim Cup 2016 has come to its end. We can look back at a wonderful event with many highlights. A big thank you to everybody who contributed in making this event possible. Also thank you to the audience who massively filled the stands in the swim stadium.
