Close racing in this morning’s heats

The Swim Cup which takes place in the Pieter van den Hoogenband swim stadium has commenced. This morning’s session consisted of several nice heats in which in particular many Paralympic records were broken.

The first heat is the 200m Butterfly in which top swimmers appeared during the three series. In the first series it was Dutchman Maarten Brzoskowski’s turn, his finishing time was 2.02.68. Lásló Cseh followed in the second series swimming a new SwimCup record of 1.55.95. Velimir Stjepanovic won the last series: 1.58.26.
Amongst the athletes in the last series 50m Backstroke were Dutchmen Jesse Puts and Laurent Bams. Both gentlemen are eager to finish first, however, it is Puts who claims the victory. He is the first one to finish with a time of 25.89, Laurent is following closely and finishes just 0.05 seconds later: 25.94.
Zsuzsanna Jakabos celebrating her birthday today (26) swam to a first place (4:45.68) for the400m medley finals this afternoon .

Success for Dutch talents
A number of the many Dutch talents proved their skills this morning. In the 200m freestyle race no less than four girls qualified for the European Games in Baku: Laura van Engelen (2:03.61), Marieke Tienstra (2:03.71), Frederique Janssen (2:03.87) and Marrit Steenbergen (2:02.54).

Paralympic athletes smash one record after the other
Mark Faber’s Paralympic team were in great shape this morning. Three of his athletes reached the limit for the IPC WC in Glasgow: Marc Evers (S14) 200m medley, Tim van Duuren (SB8) 100 m backstroke and Lisette Teunissen (S3) 50 m backstroke. Teunissen even managed to swim her limit into a new world record: 53.47. Apart from these achievements various Paralympic Dutch records were smashed:
• Manon Vermarien (S14) 200m medley in 2.22.70.
• Sterre Veerman (S13) 50m backstroke in 33.81.
• Cleo Keijzer (S8) 50m backstroke in 39.14.
• Olivier van de Voort (S10) 50 backstroke in 28.95.
• Thijs van Hofweegen (SB6) 100m breaststroke in 1:35.24.

Afternoon session
The afternoon session has many nice (semi) finals amongst which 400m medley with Zsuzsanna Jakabos and the 200m freestyle with Femke Heemskerk and Esmee Vermeulen. The session will be closed with the men’s 100m freestyle in which amongst others Sebastiaan Verschuren, Velimir Stjepanovic and Kyle Stolk will perform! Do you want to see these finals?
